10 Gross Facts You'll Wish You Could Unlearn About Your Bedroom

Apartments Cleaning in Houston

What if we told you the place you spend approximately one-third of your life is crawling with germs, bacteria and dust mites? Yuck, is right. Sadly, some of the nastiness is pretty unavoidable, but that doesn't mean a little cleaning can't hurt. These are the dirty truths about your nighttime sanctuary and how to try to rid them from your room.

1. You sleep with 1.5 million dust mites every night

If this fact gives you the heebie-jeebies, we have some good news: Carolyn Forte, director of the Cleaning Lap at the Good Housekeeping Institute, says throwing your bedding back when you get up in the morning to allow some moisture to evaporate and to air everything out might cut down on this count.

2. The carpet contains 4,000 times more bacteria than your toilet

Eek. Just try not to think about this the next time you tip toe across your rug at night. To care for these plush surfaces, Forte recommends vacuuming them once every week to prevent build-up: "If you don't vacuum, heavy dirt gets ground in and light dust sits on top," she says.

3. And your phone is dirtier than your porcelain throne, too

Yes, the thing you put against your face, under your pillow (though you shouldn't!) and rest on your nightstand. To kill germs, Forte recommends using an alcohol wipe every few days: "Buy a box of individually packaged ones and keep a few in your purse or car."

4. Pillows collect a lot of dust mites and dead skin over the years

In fact, a 10-ounce pillow will double in weight in three years thanks to the collection of these lovely things. One way to maintain pillows is by putting them in your washing machine regularly and tossing them if after folding them in half, they don't spring back into shape.

5. Unfortunately, your bed collects a lot mites, too

According to Dreams (a UK mattress specialist), an eight-year-old mattress contains more than 10 pounds of dead skin cells. To clean your mattress, Forte recommends using the upholstery tool on your vacuum cleaner to go over the top, sides and as much of the box spring as you can access.

6. Your pajamas probably harbor nasty bacteria

At least, if you're like most of us. A survey by mattress company Ergoflex found that on average women wear their pajamas 17 nights in a row. Since you shed skin at a vast rate, these cells could harbor certain microorganisms and bacteria, like staphylococcus (eek!). To avoid this, Forte recommends washing your nighttime garb every three days.

7. People produce 26 gallons of sweat in bed every year

Which in a high humidity room is a "ideal fungal culture medium" — and, to us, screams "odors." To battle smells, Forte recommends spraying your mattress and box spring with a spray, like Lysol. It's safe to use on fabric and kills bacteria that causes odors.

8. Old cosmetics contain unsafe levels of bacteria

Scientists from the London Metropolitan University tested products that were past their prime and found traces of harmful bacteria in four out of five — which is just another reason to make sure you toss yours once they expire.

9. Viruses can live on handles for up to 48 hours.

Meaning if someone is sick in your home, you could fall victim to the illness even two days after they left their germs in their wake. To battle back, Forte says to use a surface-disinfecting spray that's EPA-registered, which will be noted on the label.

10. Sleeping with your pet could make you sick — or give you a parasite.

Say it ain't so: According to public and veterinary health expert Dr. Jane Heller of Charles Sturt University, any close contact with your pet carries some risk of infection. You could wash your bedding more often than once a week — or you could set up some boundaries for your fluffy friend.
