How Often Should I Clean...?
Houston House Cleaning Services
Wondering how often you should clean your bedding, towels, curtains or carpets? Here the answers
How often should I wash my towels?
Ideally, you should wash your bath towels once a week and even more if you are not in the habit of drying them out properly after a bath or shower. If your towel doesn’t dry properly, it provides a perfect place for bacteria to breed and will eventually start to smell. It is also advisable to not over-do it on the detergent, as too much of it is guaranteed to make your towels less fluffy.
How often should I wash my bed covers and sheets?
As a rule, you should try and wash your sheets at least once a week. Not doing so in some cases can cause an irritation, especially if you suffer from allergies or asthma. When washing the sheets, turn them inside out, as that maintains their colour and dry them in sunlight if at all possible, as that kills off any lurking micro-organisms. Alternatively, you can run them over with a hot iron once they are dry as that will also get rid of any remaining bacteria. When it comes to pillowcases, be even more vigilant, as they accumulate make-up and hair products and should be washed once a week minimum, or twice if you are prone to breakouts.
How often should I wash my pillows and duvet?
Just like your bedding, pillows and duvets need a regular clean, at least twice a year. Before you wash your pillows, remember to read the care label: most down and synthetic pillows can be put into the washing machine on a gentler cycle, but memory foam pillows should be maintained in a different way, as wet foam tends to break and tear very easily. When it comes to your duvet, always check the label first and if there is a stain, move the feathers away from the area and treat it first, before putting it in the washing machine. If you are unsure about your duvet fitting in the washing machine, try folding it in half and moving it around – if it turns easily, you have enough space.
How often should I wash my mattress?
Your mattress needs a clean twice a year, as it harbours lots of dead cells and dust, which can irritate your sleep. Make sure you give it a good vacuum with an upholstery attachment and give it a good whack whilst it is propped upwards against the wall. Lie it back down and sprinkle with baking soda. I would suggest leaving the baking soda on for two hours then vacuuming it off, this should successfully remove odours.
How often should I wash my winter coat?
Wool coats should be washed both at the start and end of the winter season, in order to keep away the moths which are attracted to human scents. In the meantime, it is advisable you use a brush to remove any everyday dirt and fluff from the coat. If your coat has a stain, try gently blotting it with a mixture of cold water and soda, which should help get rid of the stain.
How often should I wash my curtains?
How often you clean your curtains really depends on where you live – those living in cities, with close proximity to traffic will need to wash their curtains more frequently, aiming to do so twice a year minimum. First, read the care label carefully, to make sure the curtains can be washed in your washing machine, then remove all the hardware from the curtain and wash on a cool cycle, taking them out before they are completely dry, as that will make the ironing easier. You can also maintain your curtains by giving them a weekly vacuum with the upholstery attachment, or giving them a gentle shake to remove some of the dust.
How often should I wash my carpets?
Ideally, you should aim to vacuum your carpets twice a week, with a quality vacuum cleaner and at a relatively slow pace – vacuuming too quickly won’t produce the results you want. You should also make sure not to miss the harder to reach corners and crevices, as that is where the dust is most likely to build up. It’s advisable to start cleaning from the top, first doing the dusting and then the vacuuming – this will save you having to clear dust twice. Lastly, remember that vacuuming is often not enough and you need to take your carpet to be professionally cleaned. In fact, some carpet manufacturing companies will have it in their warranty, that the carpet must be professionally cleaned once a year or once every 18 months.
