Cleaning Games to Play with your Kids to Make Household Chores Fun

Next time you need some help tidying, cleaning or generally sprucing up your home, try out these games to help...

The tidying speed game

One of the most obvious tidying games is the speed game, whereby you ask your child to do a tidying task and you time them doing it. You can make this a regular weekly game, giving them the opportunity to beat their previous times. Alternatively, siblings or friends can race each other. You could even create a fun scoreboard with star stickers.

The laundry dash

You can either play this game with your child or get siblings to race against each other. Once the laundry has been ironed and folded, separate into even piles. The aim of the game is to get your pile of laundry neatly back to where it is supposed to be, such as your t-shirt drawer or their sock drawer. Organising made fun!

Play-acting

Your kids can show off their acting talents and cleaning prowess both at the same time with a play-acting cleaning game. They can dress up as a butler, cleaner, maid, or even Cinderella, to carry out their household chores. You might want to make a fun video of them doing so to make the experience even more enjoyable for them.

The toy sweep

Children's bedrooms are generally the messiest rooms in the house, which normally has a lot to do with toys strewn across the floor. The aim of this game is for your kids to pick up all their toys from all over the house and put them back into their allocated storage spots. Give them a time limit and start the stopwatch. You can shout out how much time they have left, while they run around tidying up, to increase the excitement of the game.

Mini cleaner

To make household chores more child-like and entertaining, invest in a children's cleaning kit. It will give them a sense of ownership when cleaning up and encourage them to help mum and dad out around the house. Great for role playing and boosting their imagination too.

Dice game

Each number of the dice corresponds to a different household chore. Role the dice and whichever number it lands on, your kid has to carry out the task, whether that be helping wash the car, cleaning the windows or polishing the furniture. You could do the dice game every Saturday morning as the game is unpredictable and fun.

Musical statues

Make any household chore more enjoyable for your kids by injecting some music into the situation. Play musical statues with them, and as they are carrying out the task pause the music so they have to freeze in the position they are in. Play the music again so they can continue with the job, and repeat. This is sure to evoke a lot of laughter and excitement. This game is best played with other family members or friends so you can crown the most static winner at the end of the game.

Treasure hunt

Just like an Easter egg hunt, get your kids scavenging around the house for little treats hidden underneath clutter. In the process of finding the hidden gems that you have placed they have to clean and tidy up along the way. It's a win win.
